The Ultimate Water Journey

The two award-winning documentaries “The History of Water” and “The Future of Water” present for the first time a broad, comprehensive story of how humans’ battles with water have shaped our past and will shape our future. They contain moving and detailed accounts from a global journey to almost 40 countries on five continents.

The first series (4 progr. a 52 min.) tells with fascinating examples how water has played a fundamental but varying role in all societies from the birth of civilization along the banks of the great rivers in Asia and the Middle East to the most modern cities in today’s world, and how it has shaped religion, culture and economies. The second series (3 progr. a 52 min.) shows how in the future peace and war and political and economic might will be closely linked to the question: who will have power over water.

At a point in time when climate is at the top of the agenda, these films are especially important because they throw original light on this global issue. Unlike most other documentaries on climate change, these films do not push a specific political agenda. The series are also unique in the sense that they give a balanced, though dramatic account of humanity’s history and future, seen through the prism of water.

The story is written and presented by Dr. Terje Tvedt, a historian and professor in Geography and Political Science. He is the author of more than a dozen books and is also the Series Editor of the pioneering six-volume book series “A History of Water”. The documentaries can be seen independent from each other
